Scar : Claudius

Description: Apart from the physical act of killing the former King Claudius and Scar both share striking similarities. Neither seem to be the stronger of the two brothers the former King is described as having been a great warrior, even being buried in his military uniform. Claudius on the other hand from the way he reacts to danger and stress has no backbone. Scar as well is afraid of a physical confrontation with Mufasa, perhaps weary is a more fitting word. He states that Mufasa has gotten the “lion’s share” in brute strength. Even later the two deal with stress of ruling/guilt similarly. They never act themselves and send others to do their work such as the hyenas or Laertes (both parties actually betray them at the end). Claudius has physical symptoms of his guilt while Scar bans the word ‘Mufasa’ in order to avoid his feelings. The difference is the motive that drove the two to their actions; Scar simply wanted the power and the kingdom while Claudius was driven by his jealousy and want to replace his older brother.
